BRT Construction Broadway to Colorado End Sept. 27, Mayfair District Construction Updates + More

Colfax Mayfair BID Business Owners:

Construction on Broadway to Colorado Boulevard will end on September 27.  The traffic cones, fencing and machinery will be removed, and buses will begin operating in the center lanes. The initial service is called Bus-Only Lane Operations (BOLO).

There will be a community celebration on Monday, September 28, from 5-6 p.m. at the Carla Madison Recreation Center rooftop at 2401 E Colfax.

Mayfair District Construction

Construction in our area (segment 3) is scheduled for completion next fall. The most impactful work is underway now through December, depending on the project. 

  • Intersections: Work includes new bump-outs, an extension of the curb that narrows crossings and encourages slower turns, ADA ramps, drainage improvements and traffic signal upgrades. Depending on the project, intersection work can take one to three months.
  • Sidewalks: Work includes installation of new pedestrian light poles and soil cells for street trees. Read more information on soil cells below. 
  • 2027 work will include finish work, tree planting, street repaving and restriping of crosswalks

Construction timelines may shift due to weather, underground conditions, utility conflicts, or other unforeseen field conditions.

What is a Soil Cell?

All new street trees in our district will be planted in soil cells. You can see them underway now at Elm Street (north side of Colfax) and Fairfax (south side of Colfax). A soil cell is a strong, hollow frame installed in large rectangular planting bed under the sidewalk. Cement and a metal tree grate are placed on the surface. The soil cell keeps the soil underneath loose and gives the tree the space it needs to grow healthy roots and thrive in tough urban conditions. Intallation takes about four weeks, depending on the conditions.

Denver Legacy Business Applications 

The Denver Economic Development and Opportunity agency (DEDO) is accepting competitive applications for the Denver Legacy Business Program. This program recognizes and celebrates longstanding, independent small businesses across the City and County of Denver for their longevity and contributions to community character. 

Legacy businesses appear on a registry; members receive customized training opportunities and technical assistance, and referrals to other city and state business support programs.
